Boscombe Market celebrated Love Your Local Market 2015 and the launch of our new look gazebos with a visit from the Mayor, Cllr Chris Mayne, and Mayoress Ms June Matthews. Love Your Local Market is a celebration of the great British market culture, and as Bournemouth’s only regular open air market, Boscombe Market was keen to get involved. The market has been operating every Thursday and Saturday since 1992, offering a warm and friendly welcome to regulars and visitors for over 20 years.
Boscombe Market celebrated Love Your Local Market with events and activities running alongside the traditional market, with extra stalls and a wide variety of merchandise on offer.
Bournemouth Council’s cabinet member for Regeneration and Boscombe ward councillor, Jane Kelly, said: “Love Your Local Market is a terrific opportunity for those of us who use the market to celebrate its success and for new traders and shoppers to experience it for the first time and realise what an amazing asset we have here in Boscombe.”
As well as the traditional market fare of fresh meat, fish, cheeses, fruit and vegetables, plants, flowers and clothing, the market also has specialist stalls offering artwork, greeting cards, hand decorated biscuits, jams, chutneys and delicious ‘food on the go’ from street food vendors specializing in Thai, Chinese, Indian and traditional British cuisine.
The market has recently undergone a revamp and thanks to funding from Bournemouth Council and the Coastal Business Improvement District (BID), new gazebos have been purchased which has given it a fresh and vibrant look.
Paul Clarke, Chairman of the Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) said, “Aware of the additional footfall which the market generates, the Coastal BID is pleased to work alongside Bournemouth Council to invest in further improving the market with these very attractive new, high quality gazebos. It will make a real difference to see all the traders using the same style covers.”
Young entrepreneurs and new traders were able to try out their products with the offer of a free pitch during ‘Love Your Local Market’ days across the May Half Term holiday, alongside fresh food and a variety of hot and tasty snacks on offer. There was also entertainment on offer during both Saturdays, including children’s entertainment, face painting and a bouncy castle.
